When posting on social media, it is crucial that people understand the difference between a good post and a bad post. I have found that business accounts are especially important in evaluating social media posts, being that it is the whole company being judged. Understanding the do’s and don’ts of social media can be seen best in Ragan’s PR Daily posting.
Social media do’s include:
Personalized and unique posts – using "analysis and analytics, I can to better understand what my audience wants to see and strive to post more of that content".
Be professional – to maintain a professional look on social media, I always refrain from uploading posts with inappropriate language and content.
Use both images and text – Including both provides your audience with a better mental picture of the concept you are trying to convey.
Post regularly and consistently – "The more your followers see your content, the more they will want to interact with your profile".
Proofread – This is one of the "most important aspects I consider when posting on social media because the slightest error could change perceptions of your company".
Use hashtags – These help to "create more brand awareness by allowing people beyond your followers to explore content that is of mutual interest".
Use various social media platforms – I strive to be on every social media platform possible because it gives me a more diverse audience from all around the world.
Define objectives and strategy – Understanding where your social media started, and its growth is crucial in knowing how your social media posts are performing.
Create a posting schedule – This helps to plan just about everything for your social media; from content to holidays to events, a schedule can do it all.
Understand popular trends – With all the competition out there, your company needs to have the ‘best of the best’ social media, which means you need to understand the latest trends of the younger generations.
Social media don’ts include:
Photoshop – misleading your follows can lead them to stop trusting your company and hold you to a lower standard.
Use profanity – Using this type of language can cause a roadblock in the number of children and teens following your account.
Automated messages – This is one of my biggest pet peeves because your "followers are not able to associate with you personally"; therefore, leading them not to want to interact with your profile as much.
Abuse the numbers – "overusing numbers and statistics can quickly confusing your followers and draw you away from your company".
Overusing hashtags - "#using #too #many #hashtags #is #unsucessful".
Just use one social media platform – Only using one social media platform limits your business to reach a smaller audience than it potentially could.
Word vomit – Using too many words can become stressful for your audience to read.
Post inappropriate content– many people have heard the saying ‘don’t post anything you wouldn’t want your grandparents to see,’ which is one that I try to live by when posting on social media.
Plagiarize – Using other people’s work without giving credit where it is needed is never ok.
Over-post but don’t be a ghost – posting the "right amount every day is key to being successful in a social media campaign, but be careful not to over-post or under-post".
